of visual information that was initially processed in the conventional visual system. Sensory recruitment, by contrast, provides a parsimonious model of VWM storage, as it decreases redundancy in cortical processing. Imaging studies provide ample support for a shared neural substrate for visual representations of retinal and mnemonic origin, while behavioral studies provide ample support for (either beneficial or detrimental) interactions between VWM content and the processing of concurrent visual input. Based on the current evidence, we should therefore be reluctant to revise the traditional view that VWM recruits sensory processing areas for maintaining visual information available after termination of its sensory input.

Interaction of sensory experience and age in spatial memory performances

During a critical period of postnatal age sensory experience has a profound effect on maturation of visual cortical wiring. Electrophysiological evidence is indicating a substantial effect of visual deprivation on the visual cortical response properties. In this study we evaluated effect of light deprivation during a limited time of postnatal age on two aspects of spatial (working and reference...

Electrophysiological Evidence for a Sensory Recruitment Model of Somatosensory Working Memory.

Sensory recruitment models of working memory assume that information storage is mediated by the same cortical areas that are responsible for the perceptual processing of sensory signals. To test this assumption, we measured somatosensory event-related brain potentials (ERPs) during a tactile delayed match-to-sample task. Participants memorized a tactile sample set at one task-relevant hand to c...

Enhancing Working Memory Capacity in Persian Cochlear Implanted Children: A Clinical Trial Study

Introduction: Sensory deprivations such as hearing impairment that affect sensory input have a secondary impact on cognitive functions such as working memory (WM). WM capacity is an important cognitive component that processes language-related activities. Moreover, several studies have shown a deficit in WM in children with a cochlear implant (CI). We aimed to assess the performance of children...

Spatially global representations in human primary visual cortex during working memory maintenance.

Recent studies suggest that visual features are stored in working memory (WM) via sensory recruitment or sustained stimulus-specific patterns of activity in cortical regions that encode memoranda. One important question concerns the spatial extent of sensory recruitment. One possibility is that sensory recruitment is restricted to neurons that are retinotopically mapped to the positions occupie...
